About the Artist
Benny Brotman is a drummer, bass player, and veteran Boston drum & bass DJ, known by many as BennyB, the name he's spun records under since he started in 1996. Between 2000 and 2002, he juggled between professional music studies on the bass at Berklee College of Music and an active role in the Boston drum & bass scene, as a resident DJ and promoter for weekly club night, The Rinse, and with a part-time management position at local legend, 4Front Records. Near the end of 2002, he took some time off from school and began working on music production, using the name Subconscious23 to distinguish compositions spanning drum & bass, hip hop and breakbeat genres.
Over time Benny's composition and production increasingly became the centerpiece of his musical focus and, with this in mind, along with an interest in putting his production chops to use commercially, he returned to Berklee and applied to the Music Synthesis major, which focuses on contemporary applications of technology in music composition, production, performance, recording and sound design. In addition to a continuation of core curriculum studies and those of the music synthesis major, Benny completed elective studies in the following classes:
- Introduction to Film Scoring
- Scoring to Visuals
- Music and Sound Production for Games
- Digital Signal Processing for Production/Post Production
- Synthesis in Composition and Orchestration for Commercial Production
Finishing up over the summer semester in 2008 with a vastly expanded and refined set of tools, Benny is off to the next set of projects, with an eye on the future. He's currently working freelance and, with the initial layout of the BennyB23.com website nearly complete, looking forward to exploring the aspect of web design, which interests him: music and sound design concept and content development and integration for websites and interactive media. In time, the site will reflect these developments, however there's quite a bit more, which will be coming very soon ...//))
